For those consumers looking for a cheap navigation tool, the Magellan GPS 315 may be the right choice for them despite some of its downside such as lack of built-in routing capability and road maps. However, these downsides can be addressed by downloading maps from other sources and putting landmarks and waypoints.

Magellan GPS 315The Magellan GPS 315 is a navigation tool that boasts database that covers more than 15,000 cities while featuring a rugged and portable design that makes the device ideal for travelers who want to explore places with extreme weather and environment.

While this GPS has been designed more for foot travelers than car drivers, this downside has been may appear “forgivable” for some users given that this comes at a relatively cheaper price compared to other navigation device. However, its lack of road maps (but at least users can download their own digital maps from other sources) and built-in routing ability may be enough to make anyone think twice before purchasing this device.

Meanwhile, Magellan 315 has at least a capability that allows users to put waypoints and landmarks that will allow them to locate again a certain destination they have already been to. With this capability, backtracking along the same route will be more convenient and faster as people will be able to compare their current position with the trail displayed on the screen.

Another downside of this GPS device is that it still uses two AA batteries when most portable devices today are using rechargeable lithium-ion battery which lasts longer and is considered to be more convenient. In terms of power consumption, using the backlight of the LCD drains the batteries at an alarming rate. However, when backlighting is not in used, the GPS can last at least 12 hours of continuous use.
